Life and Rhymes of Banjo Paterson

Life and Rhymes of Banjo Paterson

Gregory North is a three-time Australian Bush Poetry Champion and a self-confessed Banjo Paterson tragic. His passion for Australia’s most celebrated poet runs deep — he has written two books about Banjo, recorded a double album of Paterson’s poetry, and has spent years bringing Banjo’s words to life on stage.

Since 2017, Greg has performed Life and Rhymes of Banjo Paterson at the North Gregory Hotel in Winton, Queensland — the very region where Banjo penned Waltzing Matilda, Australia’s unofficial national anthem. Each year, Greg spends four months in Winton entertaining visitors with poetry, stories and heritage shows that celebrate Australia’s literary and cultural history.

Now, Greg has undertaken an extraordinary journey to mark the 125th anniversary of Banjo Paterson’s Boer War lecture tour. The tour began in September 2025 and concludes in May 2026, the re-enactment follows Banjo’s original route as closely as possible, matching locations and dates from 125 years ago. Starting in Sydney, the tour winds through New South Wales, Adelaide, Tasmania, New Zealand and Queensland before returning to New South Wales — a fitting tribute to Banjo’s legacy.
