Joyful, Joyful! The Little Red Company’s Sister Act homage heads to the Brolga

A celebration of sisterhood, individuality and redemption finds the light in Queensland this winter as The Little Red Company’s sparkling Sister Act homage heads out on tour to Maryborough, Mackay, Bundaberg, Gladstone and Proserpine.

Created by hit-makers Naomi Price and Adam Brunes, Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves reunites original cast members Angela Fabian, Irena Lysiuk and Alisha Todd with new cast member Rebecca Selley and a celestial creative team that includes Gail Sorronda (costumes), Jason Glenwright (lighting) and Geoff McGahan (sound).

Director Naomi Price said Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves honoured the film’s ground-breaking celebration of diversity and inclusion while breathing new life into the hit soundtracks.

“I am beyond excited that we are getting ‘back in the habit’ for this highly anticipated Queensland tour,” Price said. “Individually, these phenomenal female artists are all superstars, but together, there’s a holiness that feels almost otherworldly.

“Rebecca joins the cast fresh from the Australian national tour of TINA: The Tina Turner Musical, and she is a powerhouse. Alisha brings gentle sensitivity and star power to everything she does as a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist.

“Angela has one of the most astonishingly powerful voices you’ll ever hear, and Irena is our Hollywood starlet, with a voice of pure honey and a heart of gold.”

Price described the opportunity to tour the show throughout Queensland as “a gift”.

“When Sisters premiered in 2021 at Brisbane Powerhouse, I don’t think any of us were prepared for just how transformational it would be for both the artists involved and our audiences,” Price said.

“The Little Red Company has a long and happy history of touring throughout Queensland, and I’m so thrilled we get to share this special show with a wider audience and work with local artists in each location, onstage and off, to celebrate the power of sisterhood.

“We are extremely grateful to the Queensland Government for their tremendous support through Arts Queensland’s Touring Queensland Fund, making it possible for a show of this scale to get out on the road.”

Reimagining the magic musical moments from the Sister Act films, including Joyful Joyful, Oh Happy Day, I Will Follow Him, and His Eye is on the Sparrow, is acclaimed vocal arranger and choir director Alex Van den Broek (Lord Mayor’s Christmas Carols, Your Song).

“It was so much fun exploring how best to highlight the things people love about the original soundtracks while packing it full of killer vocal moments for our cast,” Van den Broek said.

“If R&B grooves, soulful gospel and intricate harmonies are your thing, you will fall head over heels for this show! Plus, keep an eye out for a very special surprise finale that will bring the house down…”

Sisters star Alisha Todd, who made her mainstage theatre debut in the original season, said the films’ enduring legacy was anchored by their iconic soundtracks.

“I think what makes the Sister Act movies so timeless is at the heart of what brings all the characters together – the music and the endless passion to leave a community better than you found it,” Todd said.

“I love that both movies have such a variety of characters from different cultures, yet music brings them together and gives them all a platform to be seen and heard.

“That’s what this show is about: elevating and celebrating our sisters from all walks of life.”
