Fraser Coast residents are being encouraged to roll up their sleeves and help Council plant its 100,000th tree at a community tree planting event in Takura later this month.

Fraser Coast Councillor Michelle Govers said the free event on Saturday 25 July would mark a significant environmental milestone, with Council set to achieve its goal of planting 100,000 trees well ahead of its 2030 target.

“Planting our 100,000th tree is a fantastic achievement and reflects Council’s long-term commitment to protecting and enhancing the Fraser Coast’s natural environment,” she said.

“It’s also a milestone the whole community can be proud of, with hundreds of residents volunteering their time at community planting days over the years.”

Fraser Coast Councillor Paul Truscott, who moved a motion in 2019 for Council to plant 100,000 trees by 2030, said he was delighted to see the target reached ahead of schedule.

“When Council adopted this ambitious goal in 2019, it demonstrated our commitment to investing in the region’s natural environment for future generations,” he said.

“I’m delighted to see that commitment has resulted in us reaching this milestone four years ahead of schedule.

“Every tree planted helps create a greener, healthier and more resilient region for future generations.”

Cr Govers said residents were invited to be part of the historic moment by attending the Takura Community Tree Planting Day, which coincides with National Tree Day.

“Community planting days are a great opportunity for people to get outdoors, connect with nature and make a lasting contribution to the Fraser Coast’s environment,” she said.

“Trees provide important environmental benefits, including improving air quality, providing shade, supporting local wildlife, protecting soil and helping absorb carbon dioxide.

“The Takura event follows successful community tree planting days held in Booral and Maryborough earlier this year, where around 5,000 trees were planted.”

Takura Community Tree Planting Day will be held at the Takura Environmental Reserve (end of Barnett Road, Takura) from 8am to 10am on Saturday 25 July.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said that it would be fun, family friendly event.

“Council will provide trees, tools, gloves, a free BBQ breakfast and coffee” Cr Seymour said.

“Participants are encouraged to wear enclosed shoes and bring a hat, sunscreen and a water bottle.”
