Tuesday, June 30 will mark another milestone in Hervey Bay’s history as the iconic The Place, at 8 Pier Street, Urangan, officially reopens and celebrates 50 years of local history.
If you’ve lived in Hervey Bay for any length of time, chances are you have your own memories of this local building. Whether you remember it as the One Stop shopping complex, Twisties Nightclub or the Sporties Club, it’s a place that has played a role in countless local stories over the past five decades.
Preserving these buildings helps ensure the stories and memories connected to them can be shared with future generations.
For me, I only ever knew it as the Sporties Club. I can still remember celebrating special occasions there and enjoying a few nights out with friends. Like many locals, it’s a place that brings back some great memories.

Now, a new generation of memories is about to begin thanks to developer and builder Glen Winney from Win Projects and a syndicate of local businesspeople who worked together to overcome numerous challenges and breathe new life into The Place.
The transformation has created a vibrant new commercial precinct on the ground floor, while upstairs the former club has been reimagined into nine stylish, warehouse-inspired apartments.
Glen Winney said, “We are proud that Mayor Seymour will preside over the reopening,”
“This project has been about more than redeveloping a property. It has been about preserving a familiar part of Hervey Bay’s history and giving it a viable future.”
“The Place has been part of local life for 50 years. We hope this redevelopment ensures it remains part of the community for at least another 50.”
