Meals on Wheels Fraser Community Celebrates 58 Years and Meals on Wheels Queensland Marks 70 Years

Meals on Wheels has been serving Queensland communities with care and compassion for 70 years, and in 2026 Meals on Wheels Fraser Community is proud to celebrate 58 years of supporting the Fraser Coast.

To mark these significant milestones, Meals on Wheels Fraser Community will host a Community Gala Day on Saturday, 12 September 2026, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at 39A Islander Road, Pialba.

While our nutritious meals are an essential part of what we provide, our volunteers deliver much more than food. Every delivery includes a friendly smile, a warm conversation and the reassurance of a daily welfare check. For many clients, this regular social connection is just as valuable as the meal itself.

Today, our kitchen in Hervey Bay prepares approximately 16,000 meals every month. Around 60 per cent is delivered to clients throughout the Hervey Bay region, while 40 per cent are supplied to clients in the Maryborough area.

A Proud History of Caring

The concept of Meals on Wheels was born during the Second World War to support older individuals who wanted to remain in their own homes but needed assistance.

Australia’s first Meals on Wheels service commenced in South Melbourne in 1953, with a single volunteer delivering meals by tricycle for two shillings each.

Queensland’s Meals on Wheels journey began in Ipswich in 1956 after Mrs Rhoda Cameron, wife of the Commonwealth Health Minister, returned from England inspired by the service she had witnessed there.

As Meals on Wheels Fraser Community celebrates 58 years of local service, we acknowledge the thousands of volunteers, staff, supporters and community partners who have contributed to our success over nearly six decades. Their commitment has enabled countless older Australians and people living with disability to maintain their independence, dignity and quality of life.
